The use of communication services based abroad involves new challenges in terms of maintaining the confidentiality of communications. International communication services popular among consumers include the Hotmail and Gmail e-mail services, the Skype Internet telephone call service and the Messenger instant messaging service.

 

Finnish legislation protects the confidentiality of communication services provided by Finnish telecommunication companies, but it cannot ensure the confidentiality of communication beyond Finland’s borders. Even if the user language of a service is Finnish, this does not guarantee that the service is produced in Finland or that the processing of information complies with Finnish legislation.
