How to cancel chargeable text messages

Occasionally, mobile phone consumers receive messages they are charged for. The message may lead to a service where, by participating in a contest or ordering a ringtone, the consumer soon notices that he or she is tied to a long-term contract. In several cases, the flow of messages can be cancelled by sending the word STOP to the number where the message was sent from.

In problem situations, consumers may first make a complaint to their operator and the provider of the chargeable service. Unless this helps or will not work, consumers may contact MAPEL, the Ethical Committee for Premium Rate Services. In addition, consumers may make complaints about the content, marketing or invoicing of chargeable phone call or text message services. In unclear situations, consumers are advised to contact consumer consultants. If necessary, consumer consultants will assist in bringing the matter to the Consumer Disputes Board.

In order to block new messages, users may ask their operator to activate a barring service for service numbers, which blocks certain outgoing and incoming messages. FICORA's website provides more information on barring categories.
