30.06.2009 Market review on international communications marketsIn 2008, the number of fixed broadband subscriptions within the EU increased by 14 million subscriptions and in January 2009, there were 22.9 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 EU inhabitants. Three fixed broadband subscriptions out of four were capable of 2 Mbit/s or more at the beginning of 2009. In Finland, the corresponding share was 60 per cent. The volume of mobile subscriptions grew about seven per cent in a year so that in October 2008 there were approximately six subscriptions per five EU citizens. There were still major differences in mobile subscription prices among the countries. The price in the most expensive country may be four or six times higher than in the least expensive country depending on the user profile. Finland has the fifth lowest mobile subscription prices in Europe. The speed of delivery of letters between the European countries reached a new record in 2008 when 94.6 per cent of letters were delivered to the recipient within three days and 98.8 per cent within five days from posting. The shares exceeded clearly the level set in the EU Postal Services Directive. According to a Eurobarometer survey, conducted at the end of 2008, every fourth European parent does not restrict their children's internet use at all. The European parents set their strictest rules when it comes to that their child might give out personal information on the web. In the use of various restriction methods, the Finnish parents place in the middle of the comparison of 16 countries. All this can be found in FICORA's market review which contains the most essential information about the international communications markets. The review focuses on broadband services, fixed network telephone services, mobile services, prices for mobile services, speed of letter delivery in Europe, and restriction of children's internet use.
