Police better equipped for handling information security breaches

The Finnish Police established 18 June 2008 a Police Incident Response Team (PIRT) with a mission to improve the prevention, detection and management of serious information security incidents against the Police and the administration of internal affairs.

According to Director Timo Lehtimäki from FICORA, especially connecting information security incidents to international crime requires also police organisations to co-operate ever more actively in information security matters. "At FICORA, we consider the new unit an excellent example of how a responsible organisation acts to prevent and manage information security incidents."

Erka Koivunen, Head of CERT-FI, a national unit that deals with information security breaches, says that co-operation with the Police has been close and productive even before the new PIRT unit. Koivunen believes that the new arrangements are beneficial to the entire information security field. "FICORA welcomes PIRT to the national and international CERT community."
