FICORA introduces new .fi root name server
FICORA has introduced a secondary name server for the .fi country code. The new name server is distributed on ten name servers in Europe, Asia and the United States by using anycast technology. FICORA intends to increase the number of name servers to 16 by the end of the year.
The name server provided by CommunityDNS is the fifth name server under the .fi country code (e.fi). Including the servers distributed by anycast, the .fi domain uses 36 name servers all over the world.
The .fi root name servers are needed for Internet addresses ending in .fi. Uninterrupted functioning of the .fi root name servers is essential for the Finnish information society, because without functioning name servers for example .fi websites will not work and e-mails cannot be delivered.
On an average weekday, the .fi country code name servers receive about 240 million name server requests. With enough name servers, disruptions of individual name servers and Internet traffic interruptions caused by large denial-of-service attacks can be prevented.
