Number of valid television fees nearly 1.9 million - Obligation to pay the television fee still continues

At the end of June, the number of valid television fees in Finland totalled to almost 1.9 million (1 892 387). The number of payers has stayed almost the same during the past year.

The revision of the financing model for the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE is included in the new government platform. The government intends to decide on the revision by the end of the year. At the moment, the obligation to pay the television fee continues normally and television fee inspections are carried out as usual. Possible changes will be announced separately later.

Television fee tied to the use of reception device

A television notification is household specific and has nothing to do with watching or listening to YLE's channels. One television notification is enough for one family and it will also cover TV usage in a temporary place of residence, for example in a summer house. A household must submit a television fee if one of the residents has a device that can be used to receive television transmissions, for example

  • a digital television or television with a digital set-top box
  • a television with a satellite receiver
  • a computer that has an internal digital adapter or an external digital adapter or set-top box connected to it, or a computer that is used for watching TV channels via the internet

If the obligation to submit a television notification is neglected, the sanction may rise to approximately EUR 550. The television fee is EUR 244.90 per year, i.e. ca EUR 0.67 per day. The television fee can also be paid as an eInvoice. Nearly 50,000 payers have already started to use the eInvoice.

TV fee - great value for the price

YLE has an important role in the Finnish communications. YLE produces ca 80 per cent of all Finnish electronic communications in TV. When considering radio content, the percentage is 99. YLE provides television programmes on four channels (YLE TV1, YLE TV2, YLE Teema, YLE FST5) and approximately 20,000 hours per year, which means 54 hours a day.
