Validity period of fi-domain names extended to 5 years
Finnish fi-domain names may soon be registered for as long as five years. The amendment to the Domain Name Act will enter into force on 1 September 2009 and allow users to register fi-domain names for 12 months, three or five years at a time. The maximum validity period of five years will also apply to the renewal of those domain names that have already been granted.
Also, the waiting period time of domain names will be shortened from three months to 1 month. During the waiting period, domain names cannot be registered to a new holder, but after the end of the waiting period, they are available for all. A waiting period will follow the termination, revocation or expiration of a domain name.
Thousands of fi-domain names still without renewal
Thousands of fi-domain names will expire at the turn of August and September, unless they are renewed within the time limit. If not, websites will no longer respond and e-mail will not be delivered.
The right of use of a domain name expires unless the domain name is renewed before the end of the validity period. Domain names are available for other applicants after the waiting period has passed.
