30.06.2008 Finland successful in international comparison of communications marketsFinland, like other Nordic countries, does well in an international comparison of broadband penetration. According to the OECD survey, Denmark has the largest volume of fixed broadband subscriptions, that is, 35 subscribers per 100 inhabitants. In Finland, the corresponding figure is 30.7, while the OECD average is approximately 20. The majority of fixed broadband subscriptions in the Nordic countries use DSL technology. In an OECD comparison of broadband prices, Finland is among the least expensive countries, and the variation in broadband subscription prices is low. Finland is the leading country in mobile number portability statistics which portray competition between mobile operators. In addition, termination fees that mobile operators charge from one another were low in Finland. In 2007, the Finnish average termination fee was 7.07 cents per minute, whereas the EU average was 9.6 cents per minute. The transition from analogue television transmission to digital transmission progressed in Europe. In addition to Finland, also Andorra and Sweden began entirely digital transmissions in the terrestrial television network in 2007. At the end of 2007, a little over a half of Western European households received television transmissions digitally. The FICORA market review 1/2008 presents central information regarding the international communications market. The publication describes the central indicators of the communications market, pricing and consumer behaviour in the communications and media markets. The review is based on information that FICORA has gathered from different public sources. In the future, FICORA will publish information regarding the international communications market annually. The review can be found on the FICORA website www.ficora.fi in Finnish and will be published later also in English. Further information:
