29.11.2007 FICORA market review 3/2007 - Use of mobile data on the riseData traffic volumes in mobile networks continue to increase. On the basis of the market data collected by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA), data traffic had increased by one and a half times in July-September compared to the last quarter. The volumes nearly quadrupled in comparison with the corresponding period in 2006. At the end of September, a total of 410,000 mobile broadband subscriptions and various fixed-price data packages were in use. The volume of mobile phone calls rose by ca 7 percent in comparison with the same period last year (July-September 2006). Likewise, text messaging volumes (SMS) grew by ca 5 percent and multimedia messaging (MMS) grew by over 20 percent. According to the market data collected by FICORA, slightly less than 80,000 3G mobile phones were sold with a subscription in July-September. The 3G tie-in subscriptions sold over the third quarter of the year accounted for about 25 percent of all mobile subscriptions sold over that period. There were 1,574,000 broadband subscriptions in Finland in late September. Broadband subscription volumes grew by ca 4 percent compared to the previous quarter's end. Approximately 30 percent of broadband subscriptions had a speed of at least 2 Mbit/s. The recent statistics are incorporated into the FICORA market review of the third quarter in 2007. The market review has basic information on the communications markets in Finland, such as broadband subscription volumes, the number of fixed-network and mobile network subscriptions and the development of call volumes.
