11.01.2005 FICORA improves its services on domain name availability search and contact information searchThe Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) has established a whois service for .fi domain names. The service makes it possible to look up on the Internet, on the basis of a domain name, which company has registered a particular domain name, its contact information and the name servers used for the purpose. Due to information security reasons, e-mail addresses are not reported in FICORAs whois service. The whois service is based on an Internet standard, RFC 3912, which is coordinated by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Internet top-level domain administrators broadly use Whois services. A noteworthy advantage of the whois service is that it can be integrated into service provider systems. Companies interested in .fi domain names can then directly look up the availability of the .fi domain name they want from the online service of the service provider. The whois service improves the reliability and legal protection of .fi domain names. It is easier, on the basis of domain name holders contact information, to verify eventual malpractice of registered trademarks and names related to domain names. The customer programme whois of the whois service is a standard option in most Unix and Linux operating systems. The operating systems of Windows do not support whois service as standard, but there are several software available that are suitable for the Windows environment with a possibility for whois lookups. In addition to whois service, FICORA provides the corresponding information on .fi domain names at https://domain.ficora.fi/. FICORAs whois service for .fi domain names can be found at whois.ficora.fi. Further information:
