Use of radio links in the frequency band 57.2 - 58.2 GHz

The frequency band 57.2 - 58.2 GHz is intended for short, about 500 m long, radio link hops. The 58 GHz band is very suitable for this purpose because of its special characteristics. On the frequencies around 60 GHz, the oxygen of the atmosphere efficiently attenuates the propagation of radio signals and at the same time makes it possible to use the same frequency with high density.

Because of the exceptional attenuation of the signal, frequency planning is not made for every link hop. However, a licence must be applied for from the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority for every radio link transmitter.

Due to the special characteristics of the 58 GHz band, the licence is not granted for a geographical area. The licensed equipment may, on the contrary, be taken into use throughout Finland. The licence holder is, on special request, obliged to provide up-to-date information on the technical details and location of the radio link stations.
