Use of radio links in the frequency band 57.2 - 58.2 GHz
The frequency band 57.2 58.2 GHz is intended for short, about 500 m long radio link hops. The 58 GHz band is very suitable for this purpose because of its special properties. On the frequencies around 60 GHz, the oxygen of the atmosphere efficiently attenuates the propagation of radio signals and at the same time makes it possible to use the same frequency again with short intervals.
Because of the exceptional attenuation of the signal, frequency planning is not performed for every link hop. However, a licence shall be acquired for every radio link transmitter from the Telecommunications Administration Centre.
Due to the special properties of the 58 GHz band, the licence is not given for a certain geographical site. The licensed equipment can, on the contrary, be taken into use in the whole of Finland. The licence holder is, on special request, under an obligation to give up-to-date information on the technical information and site of the radio link stations.
