The market survey

The results of the market survey on the fi-domain name commissioned by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) during the fall of 2008 have been released. The survey set out to examine the interestedness of private persons towards the fi-domain name and what their image of the fi-domain name is. The survey was implemented by an e-mail questionnaire for current customers and by a questionnaire on two popular websites for potential customers.

According to the results, the current customers mentioned the following reasons as the most important ones for getting a fi-domain name: own name shows in the address of the home page and e-mail, communication about hobby and association related matters, using the domain name for the purposes of small business operations and intentions to establish a business in the future.

Customers base their choice of fi-domain name on the Finnish origin, credibility and efficient functions of the fi-domain name.

A typical fi-domain name customer is an over 40-year-old male who lives in an urban-like area in the southern or western parts of Finland. However, the difference between the sexes is small and the age distribution is even. The interest of various professional groups towards the fi-domain name does not, however, differ significantly from one another. The retired are more interested in the fi-domain name than the average.

More than a third of the survey respondents who are not domain name holders regarded it somewhat likely that they would get one for themselves in the future. Over half of them are likely to select the fi-domain name over other alternatives.
