Conformity assessment of equipment

The manufacturer or the person placing a product on the EEA market is responsible for the conformity with requirements of the radio and telecommunications terminal equipment. The responsible body must be able to attest the conformity, must draw up technical documentation and submit a declaration of conformity in accordance with R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC.

The technical requirements set for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment concern electromagnetic compatibility and effective use of radio spectrum. In addition, there are requirements for safety aspects regulated in the statutes on electrical safety and radiation safety. The technical requirements are given mainly in the harmonised standards published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

Receivers

The EMC Directive 89/336/EEC (2004/108/EC from 20.7.2007) applies to the receivers intended only for reception of sound and TV broadcasting. Other receive-only equipment fall under the R&TTE Directive.

Maritime radio equipment

The mandatory maritime radio equipment is covered by the Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC. A "Wheel Mark" attached to the equipment indicates the conformity of requirements of the Directive.

Aeronautical radio equipment

The ground-based air traffic management equipment fall under the scope of the R&TTE Directive. For other aeronautical radio equipment national type approval is required unless the equipment meets the Joint Aviation Requirements (JAR 21), in accordance with the Commission Regulation 1702/2003/EC, and have the appropriate approval certificates issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency.
