Trunk networks

Traffic between numbering areas is called trunk traffic or long-distance traffic. Long-distance calls can be dialled with or without the long-distance carrier access code. A user can choose the operator for each long-distance call by dialling the operator-specific code. A user can also determine the carrier by concluding a preselection agreement, which means that calls dialled without the carrier access code will be routed directly to the preselected carrier's network.

Long-distance calls

To call, for example, 345 6789 in Rovaniemi from Helsinki, dial the carrier access code and the area code as follows:

(016) 345 6789 preselected network or calls without a carrier access code
(101 016) 345 6789, TeliaSonera Oyj calls with a carrier access code
(1041 016) 345 6789, TDC Song Oy
Dol(109 016) 345 6789, AinaCom Oy
(90XYZ 016) 345 6789

Calls made without preselection agreement or carrier access code are routed to a network specified by the operator of the telephone subscription.

Numbers beginning with 10 and consisting of 3-5 digits are used as carrier access codes in Finland.
