Trunk networks
Traffic between numbering areas is called trunk traffic or long-distance traffic. Long-distance calls can be dialled with or without the long-distance carrier access code. A user can choose the operator for each long-distance call by dialling the operator-specific code. A user can also determine the carrier by concluding a preselection agreement, which means that calls dialled without the carrier access code will be routed directly to the preselected carrier's network.
Long-distance calls
To call, for example, 345 6789 in Rovaniemi from Helsinki, dial the carrier access code and the area code as follows:

Calls made without preselection agreement or carrier access code are routed to a network specified by the operator of the telephone subscription.
Numbers beginning with 10 and consisting of 3-5 digits are used as carrier access codes in Finland.
