Unusual marketing methods focused on holders of fi-domain names - FICORA counsels caution

FICORA has been contacted by numerous customers who have received offers by phone, fax or e-mail for domain names corresponding to their business name under top level domains .com, .eu etc. In these cases the offering company says that somebody is going to register the domain name in question and the company now provides the customer an opportunity of registering this domain name first, if the customer acts without delay. The prices are often exceptionally high.

Corresponding activity has appeared in Sweden, too. The administrator of the Swedish se-domain name register warns of this at its website http://nic-se.se/oseriosaforetag.shtml.

In most cases the domain names offered have not been registered for anybody, even though the person contacted had not accepted the offer. Registrations of domain names can be monitored at the whois services in the internet, for instance at http://www.allwhois.com/ and http://www.internic.net/whois.html.

FICORA reminds those who have received such an offer that a fi-domain name may not be illegally based on the protected name or mark, for instance business name, of another party. If such a domain name is applied for by another party, FICORA may terminate or revoke the domain name if so required by the holder of the protected name or mark. A domain name can also be revoked, if the information given in the application for a domain name is in essential parts insufficient or incorrect. FICORA manages the top level domain .fi only and monitors the compliance with the Domain Name Act concerning it and has no power to interfere with the marketing or registration of for instance com-domain names. The top level domain .com is administered by the American VeriSign Inc, http://www.verisign.com/information-services/index.html.

If there is any reason to suspect criminal action related to the marketing of domain names, it may be reported to the police.
