Digital TV receivers

A separate device (set-top-box, digital adaptor, digital box) or a television receiver with a built-in digital receiver is needed for the reception of digital transmissions. The device enables that digital television transmissions can be watched via any modern television receiver. A wide-screen television helps to achieve the maximal performance, because the aspect ratio of most programmes is 16:9. It must be noted that any TV and any VCR at home need their own devices or a digital adapter with two TV tuners in case the purpose is to watch and record different programmes at the same time. Personal video recorders retain a better picture quality than the traditional video recorders do. A digital TV receiver with a card slot and a smart card is needed for watching charged channels.

Due to the propagation characteristics of radio waves, diverging technology is used in terrestrial, cable and satellite transmission of DVB. Nor are the receivers designed for various transmission platforms mutually compatible. This is why a DVB-T receiver does not function in the cable network or a DVB-C in the terrestrial network. If the signal is received via a community aerial system, it is advisable to check with the landlord what sort of a device is needed for TV reception.

Child lock in digiboxes

Digital set-top boxes have an option to restrict the viewing of a certain channel by putting it behind a password. Because a child lock may function differently in different devices, parents should contact the salesperson for instructions or consult the instruction manual.
