Digital TV in Finland
Thanks to the digital switchover, viewers have been able to enjoy new channels and a better quality picture and sound. In order to be able to watch digital television transmissions, viewers either need a set-top box to go with the old television or new digital TV set. Alternatively, the housing company can acquire a so-called central set-top box, which allows residents to watch a limited number of channels. If residents decide to buy a set-top box or a digital television of their own, they will be able to watch all digital television channels.
Switching over to the system has required the entire TV broadcasting network to be digitalised. The terrestrial digital television network now reaches over 99.9 % of all Finns. More than half of households in Finland receive television broadcasts via cable network.
