Radio linksA radio relay link is used to create a fixed connection between two locations. Thus the radio relay link is an alternative to copper or optical cables. The length of one radio link hop depends to a great extent on the frequency in use. For example, on frequencies below 10 GHz, a hop can be up to 60 km, whereas the length is about 500 m on the frequency 59 GHz. If longer connections are needed, hops can be linked one after the other. In Finland, the frequency ranges, frequency bands and transmission capacities allocated to the radio relay links are listed in the Frequency Allocation Table, with references to standards for applicable radio link equipment. Typical data transmission capacities of digital radio links are 2 – 155 Mbit/s. The frequency band below 10.7 GHz is intended for hop lengths of more than 20 km. A licence is needed for each radio relay link transmitter. Based on an interference calculation, the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) defines the technical requirements for use, for example the frequency and polarisation of the radio relay link transmitter, by which the radio relay link can operate without harmful interference. In addition, requirements can be put on the antennas to be used and on the transmitter power in order to ensure effective use of the frequencies. A licence for a radio transmitter may be applied for either by letter, telefax (09 6966 410, int'l + 358 9 6966 410) or e-mail at radiotaajuudet(at)ficora.fi. An application received through e-mail will be acknowledged automatically. Our intention is to provide a licence within 20 days from receipt of an application. The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) also handles interference calculations, and if needed coordinate frequencies with neighbouring countries. In such cases, the licence cannot be granted until the frequency coordination is completed and has been accepted by the radio administration of the neighbouring country. An annual fee is collected for the use of frequencies as laid down in the Decree of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
